Sono il secondo più grande gruppo etnico del Paese come la più grande minoranza etnicacite-ref-books-google-nl-4-0[4]. Inoltre la più grande comunità di azeri al mondo vive proprio in mwggIran, superando anche coloro che vivono nel confinante mwgwAzerbaigian.

La maggior parte vive nella regione dell'mwhqAzerbaigian persiano: nelle province dell'mwhgAzerbaigian Orientale, mwhwArdabil, mwiaZanjan e mwiqAzerbaigian Occidentale ma anche in numero inferiore nelle province del mwigKurdistan, mwiwQazvin, mwjaHamadan, mwjqGilan, mwjgMarkazi e mwjwKermanshahcite-ref-5[5].
